Kenya is now the fourth country in Africa to be certified for Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) trainings by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) following a promulgation event held at the Boma Inn, Nairobi, Kenya, on 13 July 2016.

The ATLS promulgation process in Kenya, which began on 2 March 2015, was organized by the Surgical Society of Kenya (SSK) and facilitated by Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS).

This process followed elaborate discussions between the SSK, Innovative Canadians for Change (ICChange), Indiana University (USA), KRCS and other trauma players in Kenya.

ATLS will elevate Kenya to attain a new status in emergency training that is likely to propel emergency services to higher levels.

Although some trauma trainings are currently being conducted in the country, the promulgation of ATLS in Kenya will standardise the trainings.

Only three countries in Africa are certified for ATLS by ACS, and these are, South Africa, Egypt and Nigeria.
